Membership to the SPNA is now FREE OF CHARGE

These are exciting times.   Please join the SPNA to build on the innovations that have taken place in  primary care.

 

Membership is free and all Practice Nurses working in Scotland are encouraged to join the Association.   It is still necessary to register to provide us with your contact details.

 

 The SPNA has continued to grow since the decision to abolish the membership fee over two years ago.  We now have 575 members.  The conference last year was a great success with 100 delegates attending.  We asked delegates about topics and venues and considered these carefully.  As a result we will be in Edinburgh this year with what looks like a very good programme.  We need the support of members at the annual conference to enable the SPNA to continue to represent members at a variety of groups and to promote the role and view of Practice Nurses. 

 

The last year has seen nursing in the news many times but unfortunately, as is often the case, many people will remember all the adverse news surrounding the Francis repost into the failings at Mid Staffordshire hospital.  One of the recommendations made is that healthcare assistants are regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.  While many of us will endorse this, our regulatory body has had its own share of problems in the last few years and I wonder how they will manage this. 

 

The latest figures from the Information Services Division (ISD) Scotland showed GP's and Practice Nurses combined had an estimated 24.2 million face to face consultations in 2011/12.  This was an increase of over 10% since 2003/04 when records began.  Practice Nurse consultations were about 30% of all consultations.

 

With the continued drive to manage long term conditions in primary care and with reduced unplanned hospital admissions, the workload in General Practice is likely to continue to grow.  The SPNA will continue to work with other organisations to try and ensure equal terms and conditions for Practice Nurses in Scotland.  Individually we must also ensure that skill mix in practice is appropriate and any duties delegated are also appropriate.
