- Over 10,000 kidney patients to benefit from online access to Renal PatientView by 2009
- Patients with kidney disease report major self management benefits through being able to access their own test results, diagnosis and treatment information online at www.renalpatientview.org
- UK Renal Community leads the way in online patient care with success of innovative programme - Renal PatientView
The UK renal community has launched an initiative aimed at increasing the number of kidney patients benefitting from Renal PatientView to 10,000. A pioneering project, www.renalpatientview.org gives patients with kidney disease online access to their own individual, password-protected, test results, as well as information about their diagnosis and treatment, from anywhere in the world.
Speaking at a recent event in Edinburgh, Professor Neil Turner, convenor of the Renal Patientview Steering Group commented:
"Renal PatientView is an innovative online programme that allows enrolled patients to view their electronic renal patient receord from any PC with internet access, anywhere in the world. It empowers patients, allowing then, their GP's (and with the patient's permission) family members and carers, online access to up-to-date test results, diagnosis and treatment information. The programme's impressive ability to store and share information supports and promotes a team approach to disease management - patients are more confident and better equipped to take a more active role in managing their own care, whilst clarity between primary and secondary care has greatly improved".
Updated on a daily basis, the award-winning Renal PatientView was launched in October 2005 and already has 8,000 patient registrations from 33 renal units - more than half of the renal units in the UK. The Renal Information Exchange Group aims to further increase that patient registration to 10,000 by the end of the year by encouraging more renal units to participate, by training more renal unit administrators in the capabilities of the system and by improving the understanding of patients as yet unregistered with the project.
Renal PatientView takes each patient's information and links it to useful explanations about their individual kidney condition and its treatment. It shows blood test results, clinic letters, medicines and can be password-accessed by the patient and anyone else the patient permits. When receiving treatment away from home, staff of the renal unit that the patient is visiting can view the patient's up-to-date records, allowing patients better peace of mind whilst providing staff with all important information about the patient's current treatment, medication, results and medical history.
